The magnetic separation process is complicated because the various magnetism of the different ores, the amount of impurity materials, and the particle size distribution of the processed ore. This magnetic separation technique is very important in mining iron and many other metals. In magnetic separator working process, after calcination the raw ore was fed onto a moving belt which passed underneath two pairs of electromagnets under which further belts ran at right angles to the feed belt. The first pair of electromagnets was weakly magnetised and served to draw off any iron ore present. The second pair were strongly magnetised and attracted the wolframite, which is weakly magnetic. These machines were capable of treating 10 tons of ore a day.

The magnetic assembly is fixed inside of a revolving drum consisting of a stainless steel shell with aluminum heads. The magnetic assembly is stationary but is adjustable peripherally. The drum shaft is supported by spherical roller bearings. All drum bearings are lubricated from the non-rotating shaft end.
The slurry fed into the separators is very abrasive, so all tanks, boxes and launders are lined inside with rubber. The revolving drum is lined with either rubber or stainless steel and its ends are fitted with specially designed end collars. At some applications these wear protection measures need to be reinforced by increase of liner thickness or replacement by even tougher material such as ceramics or polyurethane. With wear protection system, the magnetic separator works stable and durable.
